  • Graduate of Bel Air High, Class of 1976; All-County Football and All-County Orchestra 
  • Johns Hopkins University ROTC distinguished military graduate; lettered in wrestling
  • Served with the 20th Special Forces Group of the Maryland Army National Guard
  • Active duty military service as an Infantry officer from 1980-1985; honor graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne School and the Infantry Officer's Advanced Course; earned the Army's coveted Army Ranger Tab
  • Married to high school classmate Debbie Russell (Debbie's father, grandfather, and great grandfather were owners and operators of Baltimore's famed Berger Bakery, maker of Berger Cookies)  
  • J.D. from the University of Baltimore Law School, with honors
  • Member of the Maryland Bar since 1988, practicing law in Harford County and throughout Maryland

  • 2006, deployed to Iraq as a U.S. Army Major, assigned to the 101st Airborne Division; led efforts to establish provincial level government in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit; awarded the Bronze Star
  • Served three tours (year-long each) in Iraq with the Departments of Defense and State
  • Employed by the U.S. State Department until August 2013 supporting efforts to counter violent extremists in the Near Eastern Region
  • Currently engaged in the private practice of law; has received numerous awards for providing free legal services to the disadvantaged
  • Lives with wife Debbie in the Bel Air Historic District; they have five children, graduates of Harford County Public Schools, the University of Maryland, Towson University, Catholic University, and Salisbury University
